What the f**k happened? I'll tell ya what happened: After several years of being uninspired by the play-by-numbers house and techno scene around him in New York City, Abe Duque and Blake Baxter channelled their frustrations into a raw, bumping track that revitalised dancefloors in 2004. With Duque's boompty-house beat and Blake Baxter's vocals that single out once-legendary clubs and underground figures and ask What Happened?!?!, the track just happened to shift a not-so-shabby 25,000 units on wax.
It's a bona fide modern classic, which is why Process has re-released it to go alongside Abe's recent album Don't Be So Mean - as well as creating a competition with Resident Advisor and Soundcloud for their members to remix the track. Check out all the remixes at SoundCloud. Once the competition is over on 11 October, we'll also add the best remix to this promo package, and it'll be part of the vinyl and digital release.
But for now, check out the original, Marc Romboy's simultaneously retro and forward-looking mix, and Max Cooper's tweaky new version - and also check out Abe's recent video documentaries of being on the road with Blake on YouTube.
All tracks written by and vocals by Abe Duque and Blake Baxter.
Track #2: remix and additional production by Marc Romboy and 45 Rocks.
