Those raves were for the third EP in King Roc's 'Chapters' series. And now here is the fourth and final EP before the release of King Roc's debut album, Chapters, in March 2009. The album is inspired by dreams and intuition, as is this EP - but this EP has had a particularly trippy genesis...
According to King Roc, two dreams were the inspiration for this music (and the accompanying one-off artwork, by Drunkpark.com's Seb Godfrey). The first, King Roc says, "was about a plant. It was so big and so squared off it looked like the support of a building. I was peeling off layer after layer of leaves, trying to find what it 'meant'. And at the top of the plant was a single huge white flower; I climbed up to it, touched it, woke up. And could not go back to sleep to return to the plant, which seemed so important.
"The next dream was just as surreal but more unpleasant - a chase dream. I was a spectator, but the outcome felt personally important to me. People in this dream world could vanish and reappear, jumping from place to place, and they were 'chasing' each other in a series of jumps until one character was sliced into bits by metal rods fired from some kind of gun.
"Lovely, I know.
"But the point was I woke up in awe that the mind can make up whole worlds and stories, so emotional, and so detached from my day-to-day life. They were so vivid. What if I had been able to pick the flower? Maybe I woke up because mind wasn’t ready for the answer I would get from picking it. If I thought this kind of vividness would happen every night, I’d see going to bed as being like a great trip to the movies.
"There are theories that dreams are the result of natural dimethyltryptamine (DMT) in the brain - that your mind takes you on a trip when you sleep. I’ve spoken to people who’ve taken DMT. They say it’s always a journey. You reach a doorway, a decision point, and you have to decide to go through it. Inside we have all the answers but we don’t know how to open the door except unconsciously..."
